Giclée Direct use a large format digital camera to produce
45 megapixel images. This is almost 10 times the resolution of
consumer digital cameras! Put simply, this means we can photograph
artwork at print resolution (300dpi) in one-shot up to a maximum
size of 24 x 16 inches. Sizes larger than this involve taking
two or more photographs then stitching them together using dedicated
software.
The digital image contains no grain (like conventional film)
and is a first-generation image. In comparison, conventional film
must be scanned using a drum scanner (second-generation) before
printing resulting in some loss of detail.
Film Scanning
If access to the original artwork is not possible we can also
print from transparencies. Transparencies are scanned at resolutions
up to 5500dpi to get as much detail from the film as is possible.
